9/11 - "Why would someone risk their life just to knock down a building?"

This is a question that my son asked me on Sunday.  It's not an easy answer and the circumstances around 9/11 can be very difficult to explain.  Here is your question:  How would you respond to this question if someone younger than you asked it?   History is happening all around us, and how it is interpreted and explained changes constantly.  There are no "right" answers.  Do your best to answer the question.

  1. When you are afraid of something, in this case being power, you do not want to show that you are afraid. Maybe this makes you think you have to retaliate, to eliminate the power. Maybe this wasn't the case during 9/11. Maybe Osama Bin Laden threatened the people who were flying the planes. Threatened their family, their community. Or maybe they were just as afraid of power as he was. We may never know, but to these people, this was the right choice.

  3. The two people who crashed the airplanes on the twin towers gave their life away because of their beliefs. The group Al Queda hate the country of the United States. The people believe that the U.S is a bad country and they were kind of jealous of them. The U.S is a big and powerful country. Also they thought that the U.S were taking their oil. The people gave away their lives for something the believed in and what they thought was the right cause.

  4. I think someone would risk their life to knock down a building because it's a way to show what they believe in. Even if they do kill themselves by crashing into a building it makes a statement. The terrorists who knocked down the twin towers made a statement that they're afraid of our country since it is strong and powerful. Sometimes there are sacrifices when it comes to standing up for what you believe in.It was a huge tragedy for the United States and our whole world, but it gave us the opportunity to be an even stronger country. The terrorists wouldn't have crashed the buildings if they didn't believe that it was the right thing to do. We all have freedom and can make our own choices and it was their choice to lose their lives in order to make a bold statement and impact on the world.

  5. I would respond to this by saying some people just dont like our ways of life and how much freedom we have. The muslims think that once women reach a certain age they should cover their hair and bodies. Osama Bin Laden believed that the best way to solve this matter was with violence so he attacked the world trade centers. In this case he thought so strongly of his beliefs that he would be willing to kill thousands of people just to get his message across.

  6. They were looking for power and maybe they thought if they did knock down the buildings that their name would be remembered forever. Their names will be remembered forever but not as the good guys as the bad guys. Also, they thought that in Afghanistan that they would be a hero that they bombed that bad guys (us). Next, they did not like that we had more money and more power then them. So, they bombed the towers and sacrificed their life's just for power.

  7. Some people say that they hit the building because the AlSama BinLaden and Afaganistan's people were scared of USA. So if the They didn't like our money or our power. So the decided to for terrorists to come in and take out two of our highest buildings, the Pentagon and, The White House. They did this so that they might be though of as scary and dangerous people who will try to make their country more powerful then ours.

  8. I would respond to this by saying that only a person with a true belief would risk their life to knock down a building. This person might have thought that he had to do this for the right to his country and for freedom. The people that did this only responded to violence and did not solve there problem in a civilized way. They thought that we were bad country so they crashed into our two towers because they thought it would make the world a better place.

  9. I think that somebody would risk their life because of an extreme hatred and a belief that they are doing something right for their country by hurting another. To knock over the towers wasn't just knocking over any towers, these were a symbol in new york of freedom and the workplace of so many inocent men and women. The deaths that these terrorists caused ruined many people's lives.

  10. I agree and disagree with Emma's comment. Our security has massively improved and the way we handle terrorists. However, going to the wars in the middle east lowered our economy. So in a way it made our country stronger and in a way t made it weaker.
